I find the larger monitors of today to be just as jarring, since everything becomes that much bigger. I have never been able to get DOSBOX to work with anything, so I can't help you there. As long as you don't mind keeping a walkthru loaded as you're playing to consult if you think you've missed something, the games are still playable. I've fired up Pool of Radiance on my XP machine (for the 100th time I'm sure) and yes, you will miss out on clues with the speed of the machines today.
